Have you seen it? The gap? No, not the skills gap due to the 4th industrial revolution, but the gap in the timeline of my employment. Yes, I have one. My gap started when my family moved to Copenhagen and looking back on my gap I would describe it as both: a waiting time and a growing time.

During my waiting time, I certainly didn’t want it to be wasted time though. I had the privilege of being a stay-at-home-parent and I applied for lots and lots and lots of jobs and eventually, I joined the amazing HR team at UNICEF Supply Division, Copenhagen.

My gap was a growing time for me. I took Danish lessons, learnt Danish culture, read books, went for long walks, made new friends and volunteered with my local Church. I know that I grew emotionally and spiritually in ways that I would not have if I was in my normal everyday routine.

I certainly did have times where I did feel like a failure, unemployable and culturally inept. I got through this time as I believed I was at the right place at the right time, with the love and support of my family and friends and my faith.

We all experience gaps at some point in our lives. Gaps are not bad and when they end, because it will end, it pays to review them. You might be surprised how you’ve grown!
