There is a lot of noise around “the great resignation“, and I like that many have reframed it as “the great opportunity“.
What can employees do?
Personally, I think it is the great opportunity for employees to…
- talk about job crafting a new role
- discuss development options
- confirm you’re aiming for the best KPIs, OKRs, goals, etc
- consider changing roles in the same organisation
- ask about talent development possibilities
- learn more about your employment contract
- have the awkward, difficult, challenging, courageous conversations
- explore elevating your passion project
- take a sabbatical
- something else…
After all that, it might be time to look for a new role outside your current company.
What do you think of my list of opportunities? What else would you add?
“I’m just not convinced that millions of middle-class workers are waking up thinking, “Finally the right time to open my pilates studio!” Or: “I can level up by getting a promotion with our biggest rivals!” They are more likely to be thinking, “How can I hang on to what I’ve got? How can I find stability?”
Pilita Clark (Financial Times)
What can employers and managers do?
Above is what I think employees can do at this time, and there is a plethora of information out there about what employers and managers can do to retain their employees. Such as:

Do you have any other links to articles on employee retention you’d like to share?
Finally, “A great conversation”, is perhaps really awaiting employers and employees alike. Maybe this is the core of “The Great Opportunity” an honest conversation.
