To be honest we have all felt like a fraud or an impostor at sometime. Be that at work, church, in relationships, parenting, cooking dinner for friends… it is endless where these feelings can creep in.
The next question to ask after you identify this feel is:
Am I looking for a quick fix or antidote?
Well… I am not sure there is a quick fix or antidote to your feeling of being fraud or impostor.
But here are somethings for you to consider:
- be kind and give grace to those you meet today – especially since we never really know how much has been show to us.
- do your best and keep turning up on time – there is power in the simple
- ask for advice – because sometimes asking for help is too hard.
- clarify expectations and deadlines – alignment is key
- drink as much water as you do coffee – I’d say even more
- go for a walk – when it all feels like it is too much this can unlock your thinking
But hang on a moment… feeling like your not enough an actual problem?
- Aren’t we all meant to be growing and developing?
- Aren’t we all meant to be on a journey of discovery?
- Aren’t we all mean to be a work in progress?
Well, in short, yes we are all meant to be growing, developing, discovering, and making progress. Regardless of any metrics you that could be applied here like age, salary, status, title, etc.
Ed Ley writes that we in general we need 51% certainty to move forward. Take some time now and rate your situation out of 100% of how competent are you? I think you might be surprised.
Will this knowledge make your feeling change? Probably and now the next thing is to explore about what your development journey looks like. This should include a cheer squad of colleagues, family and friends to bring encouragement, feed-forward, and care as you become who you and your family, community and organization needs you to be.
And yes, there are times when we all feel alone, isolated or lost – but know this: you are loved, valued and there is a way forward.
